We left the Athens port with a bad taste in our mouths-- the port was dirty and creepy. I would not say that I enjoyed the night ferry to Santorini-- we slept on the floor and kept waking up to the sound of ominous screeches-- but it was not necessarily unpleasant. We met an American girl (who invaded our sleeping space with her bags) who was moving to Santorini to live with her boyfriend/husband (not sure) who was from the island. We kept seeing her significant other around town during our stay and were all really jealous of the girl when we had to leave Santorini.
Our hostel was located in Perissa, which is a small town on one side of the island. The rooms were really nice, but the people who worked there acted like they had no idea we were arriving and were incredibly unorganized. That did not stop us from having the time of our lives!
We rented ATVs (don't go to Santorini without doing this and remember to bring your driver's license!) and drove around with pink trash bags on when it started to rain. One morning, Sarah and I woke up early and drove an ATV to the black sand beach to watch the sun rise. It was cloudy, so the sun wasn't spectacular, but it was still worth it.
We took a boat tour to the volcano and Thira, an island nearby.
Our tour ended in the city of Oia, which was amazing. We spent the rest of the day walking around and soaking in the beauty.
The next day, we rented a car and drove all around the island. We went back to Oia and rode donkeys, stopped by the capital city, Fira, checked out of our hostel in Perissa, and explored the lighthouse on the tip of Santorini. On our way to the port, we took a detour and hiked around the red sand beach. We were all sad when we had to leave Santorini-- we would miss it (and the bakery down the street from our hostel too).
